What Our Alberta Indigenous Games Mean to Our Youth
2024 AIG Scholarship Recipient: “I feel honoured to get an opportunity like this, to do something I love surrounded by friends, family and other native kids who feel just as excited as me to be a part of something becoming a big event. It means so much to me to take this opportunity, an opportunity my ancestors never got and something I'm sure they never thought would happen. I also feel so blessed to have an amazing group of people who organize an event this big for native kids to get opportunities they would never get from only being seen in their reserves, they give kids an opportunity to be seen and have equal chances as non native kids.”
2024 AIG Scholarship Recipient: “I lost a close friend and fellow volleyball teammate to overdose but we attended the games together and she enjoyed every moment of it, we all did. Attending these games and continuing our shared passion for volleyball is sentimental to me. Everyone attending the games is passionate in their sport and like I stated before, there is a sense of togetherness and community within the games because we attend the games for the same reason. Because we’re passionate!”
2024 AIG Scholarship Recipient: “The Alberta Indigenous Games are a powerful force in my life, deeply enhancing my overall health and wellness in harmony with the Medicine Wheel teachings. Physically, they push my body to its limits, building strength and endurance with every challenge. Mentally, they ignite my focus and fortify my resilience, sharpening my mind for whatever comes my way. Emotionally, they fill me with a profound sense of belonging and connection, reminding me of the strength found in community. Spiritually, they ground me in my culture and heritage, creating a deep connection to my roots. These games are more than just an event—they're a transformative journey that brings balance to every aspect of my life, nurturing me in mind, body, heart, and spirit. It’s all about growth and that’s what we should all be striving for as athletes.”
2024 AIG Scholarship Recipient: “Being part of the Alberta Indigenous games means to me is by being with both Métis and Indigenous peoples who I consider family. For many years it was a struggle to fit in comfortably with different ethnicities when playing sports, however the Alberta Indigenous Games provided me both comfort and made me fit in with my family. I enjoy being part of the Alberta Indigenous Games each year for the reason that I can meet not only new friends but new relatives that I have not yet met.”

2025 Alberta Indigenous Games Executive Summary
Our 2024 Alberta Indigenous Games (AIG) was historic as we had a record breaking 6,030 registered Indigenous youth from all over the province of Alberta with 10%% of them from outside Alberta. We had 500+ teams and in February 2025 our 4th annual AIG Championship Cup awarding communities the opportunity to earn points based on competition and sportsmanship. We also gave out 30 scholarships for our 30 youth that applied that graduated from high school and enrolled in secondary college/university or trade school. We helped many of our youth and their families/communities heal in providing the opportunity for them to get back to a sense of normalcy for the 4th straight year following the covid-19 pandemic years.
August 7-16th, 2025 will mark the 8th overall AIG Games since the loss of our founder the late Allan Ross after our 2015 Games and 11th overall AIG Games since the inception in 2011. We will bring together Indigenous youth from across Alberta and surrounding regions outside of Alberta to engage in 10 days of 18 competitive sports, traditional games, special events, education, and cultural connection.
We are looking to pick up where we left off in 2024 and continue to build on our tremendous growth and momentum. Our initial Games were held in 2011 and we had 300 youth registered. We followed in 2013 with 400 youth and in 2015 had 480 youth registered. In 2017, we made a big jump and had over 1,100 youth registered, doubling from 2015. For the first time ever we held back-to-back Games and became a yearly event in 2018 in which we held a condensed 5 sport Games for the first time as compared to the 10 sport event and we still had over 900 youth participate with over 100 different teams throughout Alberta participating. In 2019, the Games exploded with over 150 teams competing and almost 2,100 athletes registered that played in all 13 of our sports. There were 31 First Nation Communities that sent teams and 2 Metis Communities. There were several teams from Saskatchewan that came and even one from New Brunswick sent a volleyball team. The 2020 AIG Games unfortunately had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Then as stated above in 2021 with just 6 weeks notice we put together our Games and had over 2,700 youth participate with teams coming from over Alberta with several from Saskatchewan and one from British Columbia!
In 2022 we had 4,120 Indigenous youth registered with over 400 teams and 40 of 46 First Nation Communities in Alberta sending Teams and 3 of the 8 Métis Settlement communities sending teams as well as the Métis Nation of Alberta sending 10 teams! We had a total of 144 Indigenous communities represented at our games through the individual youth, with 91 of them outside Alberta! We had over half of the First Nations in Saskatchewan have representation with 36 of 70 First Nations! 9 for BC, 16 from MB, 9 from NWT, 1 from Yukon, 3 from Nunavut, 1 from Quebec, 6 from Ontario, 1 from New Brunswick, 2 from Nova Scotia, 3 from Newfoundland, and from the states 1 from Maine, 1 from Montana, 1 from Iowa and 1 from Washington!
In 2023 AIG, we grew to over 5,003 registered athletes with many teams from several different First Nation communities in Ontario that drove over 16 hours to get to our Games! We had many teams from Saskatchewan and for the first time ever a team from Montana came! We even had a team from Quebec drive 5 hours to Ottawa then fly to Edmonton for our Games. For the first time in any sporting event that we are aware of we had Tipi’s outside of each venue which was a major benefit for youth and coaches to go seek peace and healing in. We had fireworks at AIG for the first time after a midweek medal ceremonies and at the end of the Closing Ceremonies.
In 2024 AIG, we grew to 6,030 registered athletes across over 500 teams with 10% of them coming from outside Alberta. We had a record breaking 135 volleyball teams with 20% of them coming from out of province including about 10 teams or so that flew in from Ontario with several flying in with their families from Toronto. For a second year in a row we had tipis outside each venue and for the first time ever had Elders and Knowledge Keepers stationed at each Tipi to provide support and guidance. Many athletes, coaches and teams requested and received smudging before and/or after their games. We are very proud of the efforts of our spiritual leaders helping people connect with their culture and the Creator. We had fireworks again for the second year in a row which grew an even bigger audience than in the 2023 Games.
With our partners and sponsors support we have become the LARGEST SUMMER GAMES IN CANADA and the LARGEST INDIGENOUS SUMMER GAMES IN NORTH AMERICA and we hold our Games every single year when the next largest games are either every other year or every 4 years!!!
Our mandate for the Alberta Indigenous Games is “RECLAIMING OUR YOUTH through sport development, educational empowerment, career opportunities, and cultural connection.” In that spirit, the Edmonton Native Ball Association (ENBASports) is honoured to organize the 2025 Alberta Indigenous Games. The Games will be located in the City of Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
ENBA Sports will build on the success of the Alberta Indigenous Games held in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. They will also build upon partnerships previously established and enter into new relationships to bring over thousands of Aboriginal athletes, coaches, and their families to the 2025 AIG Games.
“Body and soul heal together and individuals heal as community heals. The Alberta Indigenous Games bring together sport and thought, tradition with innovation, individuals, and community, history and the present moment, heart and soul. The event facilitates physical development and emotional growth, friendly competition and cooperative effort, just the right combination to promote healing of the body/mind.”
-Dr. Gabor Mate, M.D. Physician and Author
August 7th-16th 2025 AIG Games will feature role model mentors, Elders, Indigenous arts, speaking, music, dance, and other cultural gatherings affirming the theme of “Reclaiming Our Indigenous Youth”.
Our organization is proud of the fact that we are a working board where each individual within the board has important roles in preparation for, during and after the games. We feel we have been brought together and guided by the Creator to put on our Games for our youth, their families and communities.
In 2025, each sport varies on age categories depending on what works best for each sport. The 18 sports are currently being planned: Archery, Athletics (Track & Field), Baseball (Boys), Basketball, Ball Hockey, Beach Volleyball, Canoe/Kayak, Cross Country, Golf Singles and Golf 4 Player Team Scramble, Fastpitch Softball (Girls), Flag Football, Handgames, Lacrosse, Skateboarding, Soccer, Tipi Raising, and Volleyball. In 2024, we introduced Tipi Raising for the first time and for the first time in AIG History age divisions for U9 and U7 meaning we had 5 to 9 year olds competing in the sport of baseball/t-ball which we will in 2025 hold Tipi Raising again and have younger athletes participate. Sport coordinators, and their staff, will be selected in collaboration in several sports with provincial sport bodies to ensure sanctioned officiating, accountability, safety, security, and professional scheduling of events. We also anticipate over 400+ volunteer positions.
The Alberta Indigenous Games will continue to promote, integrate, and infuse the Circle of Courage philosophy throughout all events of the games. All staff and volunteers will be encouraged to assist in delivering an emotionally supportive environment, to reclaim our youth through the wisdom of Indigenous culture and the amazing power of sport. A manual to foster this environment will be developed and available as a resource for athletes, coaches, staff, sponsors and volunteers.
